POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road crash on the A1, just outside East Lothian.
At about 3.40pm on Sunday, a Mercedes Vito van was heading south, near Grantshouse, when it was involved in a head-on collision with a red Scania articulated lorry travelling in the opposite direction.
Sadly, as a result of the collision a 20-year-old female passenger in the Mercedes Vito was pronounced dead at the scene.
A stretch of the road was closed for several hours to allow for collision investigation work to be carried out and for the scene to be cleared.
Sergeant Gary Taylor, of the Road Policing Unit based in Dalkeith, said: "Unfortunately a young woman has lost her life and we are currently working to establish the full set of circumstances that led up to this collision.
"I urge anyone who was travelling on the A1 on Sunday afternoon and who remembers seeing either the Mercedes Vito van or the Scania lorry to please contact police if not already done so."
Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively a report can be made anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
