DAMAGE to a gas main in Wallyford knocked out the gas supply to most of the village this weekend.

The gas main was damaged on Saturday, reportedly during work at the nearby construction site by Strawberry Corner.

Much of the village was left without gas as a result of the damage.

Engineers had to go round to all houses individually to turn off the gas main - they then returned to turn it back on once it was safe to do so.

A customer centre was set up providing emergency heaters and cookers for those in need.

On Sunday night, gas provider SGN posted the following update: "Our engineers have continued to work tirelessly to restore gas supplies in Wallyford this evening.

"We have now restored gas to over 1,150 properties in the village and we’re continuing to revisit the final remaining properties to turn the gas back on.

"If you were out when our engineer called to reconnect your gas supply, please contact us on the number detailed on the letter we left for you. We will arrange for an engineer to revisit your property as soon as possible.

"You will be compensated for your time without gas. After the first 24 hours, you will receive £30 for each 24-hour period without gas. This will be paid automatically through your gas supplier.

"Our customer centre at Wallyford Community Centre has now closed. Should you need us tonight or in the morning, you can call us on 0800 912 1717.

"We have been overwhelmed by the support and understanding of Wallyford residents this weekend while we’ve worked to repair our damaged gas main and restore supplies. Thank you for your patience."

Earlier, police had closed roads into the village on Saturday, while some residents were reportedly evacuated.

At the time there was a very strong smell of gas in the area and long delays to traffic.

SGN had previously said their network "was damaged [on Saturday] by a third party".
