A GULLANE man failed to hand over details to police as to who was driving his vehicle as he did not want to be labelled “a grass”, a court heard this week.

John Clark was visited by police officers while he was staying at a Dunbar bed and breakfast in connection with an alleged offence involving his van earlier that day.

Clark, of Muirfield Drive, was asked to provide details of who was driving the van when the alleged offence took place at about 7.30am on November 15 last year.

But during the questioning, the 30-year-old construction worker refused to divulge who had been behind the wheel of the vehicle that morning.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told on Tuesday that police arrived at the Dunbar B&B at about 10.58am to enquire about the alleged early-morning incident at Belhaven Road in Dunbar.

Fiscal depute Janet MacDonald told the court that Clark informed officers “I am not admitting to anything” during their conversation and he was subsequently arrested and charged.

Defence agent Robert More said during the questioning at the B&B that Clark’s bedroom door had been ajar and he “would have been branded a grass if he spoke to the officers”.

Mr More said that his client was in full-time employment with a county construction firm and lived at home with his partner and young child.

Sheriff Kenneth Campbell sentenced Clark to pay a fine of £245 and placed six points on his driving licence.

Clark pleaded guilty to being the keeper of a motor van and failing to provide details of the driver to police officers at Belhaven Road, Dunbar, on November 15 last year.
