A REUSE and recycling furniture charity that supplies to families and individuals in need enjoyed a "badly-needed" busy few months following the easing of lockdown.

Recycling First, in Macmerry, supplies to people in need and sells low cost second hand furniture – they contribute to the environmental sustainability of East Lothian by focusing on re-using and repairing household items.

The Recycling First warehouse, at Macmerry Industrial Estate, had been closed since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but reopened on August 21.

They enjoyed a "badly-needed" busy few months as bargain hunters and regulars flocked back to the warehouse.

Recycling First has helped support 148 families with household furniture to help set up home and saved 30 tonne from going to landfill.

Tom Logan, Recycling First project manager, said: "We were so happy the doors were allowed to open again after a long period closed.

"To be honest, our main worry was seeing all our customers again and making sure they were okay.

"Some of them come in and might not buy something every time but they come in for a blether and sometimes it is the only chat they get.

"We have all missed so much.

"On our return we were so busy and I can't thank local people enough for their support."

Around 80 per cent of the charity's income comes from the sale of donated items and house clearances.

As well as providing valuable funds and support to help people rebuild their lives after being homeless or going through difficult times, the warehouse provides work experience, training and purpose for the people they support.

Recycling First are on the lookout for volunteers to help with warehouse duties, preparing donations and serving in the warehouse.

Anyone with donations for the warehouse can call for a free uplift within East Lothian on 01875 615797 or email recyclingfirstel@gmail.com.

Recycling First is open Mon to Fri 10am to 4pm, and open one Saturday a month.

The next weekend opening date is next Saturday from 10am to 2pm, where a car boot sale will be held.
