A two-year-old boy who tragically drowned in a river has been formally named by police

Jacob McIntyre's body was found in the fast-flowing water only an hour after he was reported missing from a remote rural property.

It is thought that he found a way out of the house at Milton of Drimmie, near Bridge of Cally, Perthshire, and made his way down into the nearby River Ericht.

A huge search operation was launched after the boy went missing at around 11.15am on Sunday.

But sadly, the youngster was found in the river at around 12.35pm and taken out of the water by firefighters.

He was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police yesterday said their investigation into the circumstances of the death continues and that a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A spokeswoman said: "Jacob's family are understandably upset at their tragic loss and do not wish to make any further statement at this time."

Detective Chief Inspector Iain Wales said: "This is a very tragic incident which resulted in a young boy sadly losing his life.

"The events will undoubtedly bring shock and sadness to this small community and further afield.

"We would like to thank our Scottish Fire and Rescue Service colleagues for their courage and assistance in Sunday's difficult conditions.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Jacob's family at this difficult time."
