EAST LOTHIAN golf star Catriona Matthew is three shots behind the leaders, at the end of her opening round of the Olympic Games.
Playing alongside Israel's Laetitia Beck and Shiho Oyama, of Japan, the former Women's British Open champion finished level par for the day in Brazil, four shots behind the clubhouse leaders.
She made an encouraging start, as she negotiated the opening two holes without dropping a shot.
She suffered a setback at the third, with a double-bogey six taking her to two-over-par, before birdying the sixth to get a shot back.
Matthew, 46, then birdied the ninth to move back to level par at the turn.
She birdied the 11th, but a bogey on 13 saw the county star return to level par, and she was unable to progress further up the leaderboard during her opening round.
Four players finished the first day top of the leaderboard on four-under-par.
She is due back on the course tomorrow for the second round
