WALLYFORD powerlifter Micky Yule has set his sights on the 2018 Commonwealth Games, after disappointment at the Paralympics.

The 37-year-old former army staff sergeant finished sixth in Rio, after equalling his personal best lift of 180kg in the under-65kg category.

Yule, who lost both legs after stepping on an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2010, was disappointed with his performance, but admitted he loved the experience of being in Rio.

He said: "The Paralympic Games have been an incredible experience.

“Being in the ParalympicsGB team is so inspiring, seeing the other athletes train and prepare is amazing.

"I can’t help but want to be a part of this team."

After his competition, Yule took in a number of other sports, including athletics and wheelchair basketball.

Despite missing out on a Paralympics medal, his thoughts quickly turned to avenging his most disappointment, and one suffered more than two years ago on home soil, at his next major competition.

Micky finished fourth at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and has set himself the aim of representing Team Scotland in Australia in two years' time.

He added: "Next up for me are the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, which I’m sure will come around in no time so my training starts again now -

"I’ve set a goal of medalling and I will not be stopped!”
