Musselburgh 27 Kirkcaldy 32

MUSSELBURGH fell to lower league opposition as Kirkcaldy pulled off a BT Cup upset at Stoneyhill on Saturday.

Grant Talac's Burgh side made an excellent start against the Fifers, who are in the league below, as second row William Fleming powered over from close range for the game's first try.

Danny Owenson's conversion gave the hosts a 7-0 lead, but Kirkcaldy hit back when Mark Wallace went over.

The conversion from Craig Letham tied the scores, before Owenson kicked Burgh back in front with a penalty.

An entertaining opening 40 minutes continued as a try for James Pow saw Kirkcaldy take the lead for the first time, before a second Owenson penalty put Musselburgh ahead once more at 13-12.

The first half ended with the visitors in the ascendancy, and a second try of the half from Wallace ensured the Fife side led 13-17 at half-time.

Kirkcaldy, coached by former Samoa internationalist, Quintin Sanft, started the second half brighter, and extended their advantage when Pow emulated Wallace's feat by scoring a second try of the game.

Letham converted, and added a penalty, to open a 14-point gap between the two sides.

Burgh were offered a route back into the match in the final quarter, though, as the visitors' Finlay Bruce was sent-off.

They made their numerical advantage tell as Michael Fleming drove over to score in the corner, and Danny Owenson's superb conversion meant the gap was down to seven points as the game neared its conclusion.

Talac's men pressed for a try to take the match into extra-time, but Kirkcaldy sealed victory when full-back Kurt Littejohn scampered over.

Burgh prop Jamie Walker grabbed a try in the closing stages after Littlejohn had been sent to the sin bin, but it was only a consolation and Burgh were sent crashing out of the competition.

Their attention will return to league action next weekend, as Talac's charges travel to third-placed Jed Forest.
