A QUARTET of promising county rugby stars have been called up to represent Scotland.

Callum Hunter-Hill and Cameron Hutchison joined their Scotland U20 colleagues for a training camp in Edinburgh earlier this week.

Lock Hunter-Hill, who grew up in Gullane, and centre Hutchison, from North Berwick, were part of a 30-man squad selected by head coach Sean Lineen for the training camp at the Oriam facility.

Hutchison’s selection is a first at U20 level, having impressed for Scotland U18 last season, while Hunter-Hill will hope to add to the nine caps he won last season.

The 19-year-old lock is a former recipient of the prestigious MacPhail Scholarship, which saw him travel to New Zealand in the summer of 2015, and he is currently on loan at English Championship outfit London Scottish.

Both are members of the national academy, while Hutchison plays his club rugby for Currie in the BT Premiership.

Sean Lineen, Scotland U20 head coach, said: “It’s imperative that those involved can learn to play as part of this team.

“We’re also looking for character, grit and a real desire to play for the jersey, along with a good working attitude and willingness to learn.

“These players are better conditioned than ever to play at international level, but they must now show they can transfer the hard-work on the training paddock to the pitch.”

“A lot of the boys have already played at international age-grade level and we want to see them step-up and lend their experience to the players around them, which should help drive the standards of the group.”

Meanwhile, North Berwick youngsters Rory Darge and Roan Frostwick were involved in a Scotland U18 training camp last month.

The duo, both pupils at the town’s high school, were among the 24-man squad picked by head coach Ally Donaldson, for a training camp at BT Murrayfield.

They were preparing for a match with their England counterparts on March 12, ahead of the inaugural U18 Five Nations tournament in April.
