A MUSSELBURGH RFC coach is heading to one of the top clubs in South Africa.

Andrew Binikos, the former Cyprus player and coach, is leaving his role as backs coach at the Stoneyhill club to take on the job of general manager and head coach of the Sharks Academy.

He moved to Scotland a decade ago, and joined Burgh, initially as a player, from Currie three years ago.

He leaves with the best wishes of the county club, which thanked the 34-year-old for his contribution.

A club statement from the club said: “It is with great good wishes and appreciation of all at Musselburgh RFC that Andrew Binikos departs for South Africa and his prestigious new appointment as a coach with Natal Sharks, one of the world’s most famous clubs.

“Andrew’s three-year tenure at Stoneyhill showed him to be not only a player of the highest calibre, but also a coach of perception and shrewdness, as his appointment to the job in South Africa testifies.

“As a player, he always appeared to find space when none was apparent to lesser players.

“He did not require blazing speed as his clever footwork allowed him to glide past opponents and his tackling and defensive cover was always sound.

“As a coach, he was both liked and respected by all the players, for his tactical acumen and friendly manner.

“All of us at Musselburgh sincerely hope that Andrew is successful in South Africa.”
