A GROUNDS assistant at Haddington Golf Club has been nominated for a top award.

Les Mitchell (pictured) is among the nominees for volunteer of the year at the Scottish Golf Awards, with the ceremony to be held in Edinburgh later this month.

He faces tough competition and is up against Lundin Ladies’ Helen Melvin, Douglas Slater of Stromness Golf Club, and Margaret Neilson (Stirling Golf Club) for the award.

If he is successful, it would represent back-to-back triumphs for the county club, after David Drew took home the award last year.

A spokesperson for Haddington Golf Club said: “Congratulations to Les Mitchell on making the shortlist for the Scottish Golf Volunteer of the Year award. This is well-deserved recognition for all the work Les does around the club and course.

“Good luck and enjoy the evening.”

He will discover if his efforts at the club have won him the trophy at the Scottish Golf Awards, which take place at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh on February 24, and will be hosted by Dougie Vipond and Alison Walker.

Jackie Davidson, head of development for Scottish Golf, said: “We congratulate [those] shortlisted for each of our award categories, all of whom have demonstrated excellence in their work to grow the game.

“It is always really inspiring to read the stories from all the entries which highlight the commitment to developing golf in their local communities and delivering a great customer experience.

“We look forward to welcoming all the finalists as our guests at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange next month.”
