TRANENT Football Club have confirmed that they were among the clubs who unsuccessfully voted for B teams to be kicked out of the Scottish Lowland Football League.

Celtic and Hearts both have B teams in the league, which is the fifth tier of the Scottish football pyramid, while Rangers B also played in the competition last season.

Lowland League clubs, including Tranent, were asked to vote on whether the B teams should remain for at least the next two seasons.

A league statement on Monday said: “The Scottish Lowland Football League can confirm that the majority of our members have voted in favour of continuing with B teams for at least the next two seasons.

“Following a process which began in October, a democratic vote was held in line with our rules at a general meeting tonight.

“The board would like to thank all our members for their contributions to the discussions in recent weeks.”

It is understood the vote passed narrowly, with eight clubs voting in favour, seven against and one absent.

Although B teams can win the league, they cannot then play the winners of the Highland League for a spot in the Scottish Professional Football League.

Following the announcement, Tranent stated on social media: “We can confirm that at the SLFL meeting held tonight we voted against the proposal for B team participation.”
