RICHIE Weir has set his sights on Ormiston Primrose climbing the standings after coming off the bottom of the table.

An impressive 4-0 win in a basement battle with Newburgh saw the county side leapfrog both their opponents and Edinburgh United at the foot of the East of Scotland Football League (EoSFL) Second Division.

The win – Ormiston’s first in the league since September – has given renewed hope in their bid to avoid the drop.

Weir said: “This season, it has to be one of the better performances.

“Going forward, we scored four goals and we did not concede.

“That is our first clean sheet in the league this season, which is pleasing.

“They did not really trouble [keeper] Kieran Beveridge, who had a couple of saves in the first half but in the second half did not have much to do.

“The performance was pleasing.”

Charlie Wilson and Guy Kerr both found the net alongside a double from loan signing Jacob Reilly.

The frontman, who joined from Edinburgh South, scored from close range in the first half before a spectacular effort from outside the box, which put his side 3-0 up, after the interval.

The New Recreation Park side have 14 games left to try to preserve their status in the third tier of the EoSFL.

Three points separate them from Tweedmouth Rangers and safety, although the club from south of the Border do have a far superior goal difference.

Weir felt that the battle at the bottom could go down to the wire.

He said: “If you lose the game, you go further behind everybody else.

“Newburgh are now three points behind us and we are three points behind Tweedmouth Rangers, with a game in hand but an inferior goal difference.

“You look at the games we have to play: we have got Edinburgh United to play twice, Tweedmouth to play, Newburgh to play, Peebles to play.

“We have got all these teams round about us and we are hoping to go and pick up points in the return games.”

The win was just Ormiston’s third in the league this campaign and Weir felt that it showed what the team were capable of doing.

Many are quick to write his side off but they battled to avoid relegation last season.

The manager said: “It is something we talk about a lot. Teams coming to us or us going there, they think it is an easy three points.

“You look at the league table and we were sitting rock bottom.

“Personally, for myself, you get used to being in the situation.”

This weekend presents Ormiston with the opportunity to make it back-to-back wins.

They host Vale of Leithen in the second round of the King Cup.

The Borders side sit bottom of the EoSFL First Division and have won just three league games from their previous 80.

Weir said: “Probably that cup game comes at a good time. Hopefully we can go and replicate how we played on Saturday and get into the next round.

“Just because Vale of Leithen are sitting bottom does not mean it will be easy. They are the league above us and, just because they have had a couple of relegations in a row, it will be a tough game and we cannot treat it any differently.”
